DEVOTION: VOICES OF THOSE WHO BELIEVE
By Zachary Berger
Faith takes many forms, some visible, others carried quietly through everyday life. In this book, I turn my attention to the people who sustain Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival, documenting the gestures, rituals, and relationships through which belief becomes a shared experience.
I approach these traditions as a guest. Photography offers a way to look closely, but it also asks me to acknowledge the limits of what I can understand. Alongside the images, interviews and personal accounts make room for participants to describe their experiences in their own terms.
Through this work, I hope to look beyond the festival’s most striking moments and attend to the devotion, care, and collective effort that give them meaning. These photographs are a record of an encounter with a living tradition, shaped by those who practise it and carry it forward.
